Youth soccer in the United States continues to grow, and a new partnership between US Youth Soccer and US Club Soccer is set to reshape how top team-based competitions operate across the country. Beginning in the 2026–27 season, the National Premier Leagues (NPL) and the US Youth Soccer National League will align to form a new national competition platform. The goal is to connect two systems that have traditionally operated separately, creating a more connected structure for clubs while maintaining a strong focus on regional competition. The new league, currently using the name “NewComp”, is expected to serve more than 10,000 teams and over 150,000 players nationwide (US Youth Soccer), making it one of the largest competitive environments in youth soccer. By working together, the organizations aim to simplify the competition structure, provide more opportunities for clubs, and improve the overall experience for players.

NewComp will be organized into eight regional conferences: Northwest, West, Central, South, Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast. Each conference will include several districts, allowing teams to compete primarily against clubs in their region during the regular season. This structure helps keep travel manageable while still providing strong competition. Instead of frequent long-distance trips, most games will take place within a team’s region. Top teams will then have the opportunity to advance to postseason play later in the season. Each district will be operated by established leagues and associations across the country. These operators will organize competition within their districts and help manage the pathway to postseason play.

Another notable part of the new structure is the postseason event organized by the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL). Beginning in 2027, top-performing teams from the NewComp and teams from the ECNL Regional League will qualify for a single postseason event. This will bring together top teams from multiple pathways to compete in a high-level playoff environment that leads to a championship event. This creates additional opportunities for teams to test themselves against strong opposition from across the country.

For players, the partnership improves both the competition experience and the development pathway. First, the regional conference model reduces unnecessary travel while still providing challenging competition. This helps players spend more time focusing on development and less time on long trips. Second, the postseason opportunities connected to the ECNL gives teams something to work toward throughout the season. These events often attract college scouts and recruiters, giving players exposure as they progress in their soccer journeys. Finally, bringing together competitions from different organizations helps create a clearer pathway within youth soccer. By connecting leagues that were previously separate, the new platform aims to make it easier for players and families to understand how teams can advance and compete at higher levels.

The goalkeeper (1) is the last line of defense that typically stays near the goal. This is the only player allowed to use hands within the penalty area. Goalies wear a different colored jersey than the rest of the team. Their main responsibilities are to save shots, help organize the defense, and start the attack with distribution. A strong goalkeeper communicates consistently and brings confidence to the team.

          Defenders

When it comes to defense, there are center backs (4 and 5) and fullbacks/outside backs (2 and 3). Center backs are in the middle with the left and right fullback on each side. Defenders are responsible for stopping the opposing team’s attack. They block shots, win balls in the air, tackle, and clear the ball out of dangerous areas. Fullbacks are generally more involved in running forward to give their team more numbers in the attack.

          Midfielders

Most commonly, teams play with 3 midfielders (6, 8, and 10). The holding midfielder plays more of a defensive role. They protect the defenders and stop the opposing team’s attack. This player also helps in keeping possession of the ball by playing simple, smart passes. The central midfielder is often referred to as a “box-to-box” player because they cover ground from each 18 yard box. They are responsible for joining the attack while still recovering back with the defense. This player has the role to distribute the ball to other players and help control the middle of the field. Attacking midfielders are considered the playmakers. They stay just behind the forwards and help create chances for their teammates and look for opportunities to score themselves.

          Forwards

The main responsibility for forwards is to score goals and lead the attack. The striker (9) plays in the center with the wingers on each side (7 and 11). It’s important for forwards to get into scoring positions, shoot accurately, and create opportunities for teammates. They often use speed and creativity to break down defenses. They also have the defensive role of applying pressure when the other team has the ball in their own half.

          How Positions Work Together

Even though each player has a specific role, soccer is a team game. Everyone attacks together and everyone defends together. When defenders win the ball, they rely on midfielders to connect passes. Midfielders depend on forwards to make runs and create space. Forwards rely on teammates to provide service and support. When all 11 players understand their responsibilities and work together, it’s like pieces of a puzzle fitting into place.

          Basic Formations

In games, players are arranged in formations. One of the most common is the 4-3-3, meaning 4 defenders, 3 midfielders, and 3 forwards. However, there are plenty of other formations out there, including 4-4-2, 3-5-2, 5-3-2, etc. Coaches decide on the formation based on their players, their opponent, and their overall game plan. Different formations emphasize different positions, tactics, and strengths, but no matter the setup, every position plays an important role.

How Mini-Pitches Are Growing Youth Soccer in America

Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, but in many places across the country, kids don’t have access to play the sport. In order to grow the game of soccer, it needs to be more accessible. Over the past several years, the U.S. Soccer Foundation has been building mini-pitches in communities across the United States with the goal of 1,000 new mini-pitches by 2026. The aim of this project is to create safe places to play soccer in areas that are underserved, giving kids everywhere the chance to play.

          What is a Mini-Pitch?

A mini-pitch is a smaller sized soccer field, with a customized hard surface, rather than grass or turf. Typically these pitches are typically fenced in, well-lit with professional lighting, and designed to be fully ADA-accessible. These courts are built for small-sided games, skill development, and everyday access. Kids don’t need to be registered with a club or pay a fee to use a mini-pitch, encouraging all kids to get outside and play soccer in their community.

          The Goal & The Impact

As of early 2026, more than 800 mini-pitches have been built, primarily in underserved communities, giving 6.5 million children across the United States access to a safe place to play within half a mile of home, according to the U.S. Soccer Foundation. They also reported that 70% of mini-pitches are built in cities that are low on the childhood opportunity index and high in population density, meaning they are intentionally placed where access to recreational space is limited. For many families, this creates an opportunity to play soccer even when traditional club programs may not be affordable. The impact is measurable, with 69% of users stating mini-pitches have increased access to soccer in their community, and 66% reporting that their experience on a mini-pitch was their first exposure to soccer-based programming. These numbers show that mini-pitches are already making the game more accessible, affordable, and visible for everyone.

          How Mini-Pitches Affect Player Development

There’s a clear developmental advantage to small-sided games. On a traditional full-size 11v11 or 9v9 field, some players have limited involvement. On a mini-pitch, games are often 3v3 or 4v4. Everyone touches the ball frequently and decisions have to be made quickly. Players operate in tight spaces that demand control, creativity, and awareness. This environment naturally increases repetitions and confidence. These skills often carry over and help players perform better on full-size fields.

          What This Means For You

If you’re wondering whether there’s a mini-pitch near you, the U.S. Soccer Foundation makes it easy to find out. View their interactive map where you can enter your zip code and see all mini-pitch locations in your area. Most mini-pitches offer free open play hours where kids can drop in without registration, along with free or low-cost structured programming such as clinics, leagues, and skill sessions. Many locations even provide equipment, so families don’t need to worry about purchasing gear to get started. The environment is welcoming to all skill levels, whether your child is kicking a ball for the first time or already playing competitively.

If your neighborhood doesn’t have a mini-pitch yet, there is a pathway to getting one built near you. Schools, community organizations, and local leaders can partner with the U.S. Soccer Foundation and other supporters to make it happen. The process starts by identifying an available or underutilized space in the community and submitting a form. From there, if the funding is available, the foundation will reach out and bring more details about the project.

          Mental Strength In Soccer

Performance in soccer is not only based on technical skills, but also on a player’s mental toughness. Confidence, focus, emotional control, and decision-making all influence performance in games. Two players with similar soccer skill levels can look completely different on the field based on their mindset. The difference between a good player and a great player can be determined by how they think on the field. Mentally strong players tend to stay composed after mistakes, make better decisions under pressure, keep confidence even when the game isn’t going their way, stay focused for the full match, and recover faster after a bad moment. Soccer is a fast, unpredictable, and emotional sport. Mental strength allows players to stay present, adapt to challenges, and perform consistently.

          Techniques To Improve Mental Toughness

Mental toughness can be developed with practice. Just like physical skills, mental skills improve when they are trained regularly. Although there are many ways to improve mental toughness, self-talk, focusing on controllables, and visualization are three proven techniques players can use to improve performance on the field.

          Self-talk

Self-talk refers to the thoughts players tell themselves during a game. When that talk is negative, it can lead to hesitation, frustration, and loss of confidence. Positive self-talk, on the other hand, helps players stay calm, focused, and engaged. The most effective self-talk is short, direct cues that guide your next action. These simple reminders help players quickly reset after mistakes and remain locked into the game.

          How to self-talk positively:

           “Stay composed”

           “Next play”

           “Be confident”

           “Play simple”

           “You got this”

          Focus on controllables

One of the biggest mental challenges in soccer is wasting energy on things you can’t control, like referees, teammates, opponents, or playing time. Mentally strong players focus on what is in their control and do them to the best of their ability.

          Things to focus on:

Visualization is the process of mentally rehearsing game situations before they happen. By imagining yourself receiving the ball, making a pass, defending, or finishing a chance, your brain becomes more prepared for those moments in real games. Players who visualize regularly often feel more confident and calm because situations feel familiar instead of overwhelming.

          Why Mental Strength Matters

Studies have shown that players who work on their mindset give themselves a better chance to perform at their best, especially in fast, stressful game situations. Just like passing or shooting, mental toughness improves with repetition. The players who train both their body and their mind are often the ones who perform more consistently and enjoy the game more. Strong mental habits help players stay confident, focused, and prepared in any game situation.

What youth players can learn from watching the big tournament

Every four years, the World Cup comes around and inspires kids all over the world. For young soccer players, watching it is not only fun, but it can actually help them see the game differently and improve how they play. Observing the best players in the world can give kids lessons that go far beyond drills and practice.

          Confidence

One of the first things youth players pick up on is confidence. World Cup players call for the ball in tight spaces, try difficult moves, and keep playing even after something doesn’t work. For kids, this is a reminder that confidence isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being willing to try again. Seeing top players play freely helps young players feel more comfortable doing the same in their own games.

          Creativity

Kids are naturally drawn to the moments that feel unexpected. A clever turn, a sneaky pass, a player taking on a defender instead of playing it safe. Those moments show young players that soccer isn’t just about following instructions or avoiding mistakes. Creativity and problem-solving are valued at every level, including the very top. For developing players, seeing that can inspire them to be bold, try new things, and enjoy the game more.

          Supporting Teammates

Young players also notice how players treat each other. They see encouragement after missed chances, celebrations after goals, and staying connected during tough moments. These moments teach kids that soccer is a team sport, that emotions are part of the game, and that how you respond to challenges matters. Those lessons carry directly into youth environments, where learning to be a good teammate is just as important as improving skills.

          Effort

World Cup games show kids what true effort looks like. Players chase every ball, sprint back on defense, fight through fatigue, and keep competing even when the game is nearly over. Young players notice this instinctively, and it helps them see that talent isn’t enough on its own. Dedication, hard work, and giving your best until the final whistle are what make great players and those are lessons that carry over to every level of the game.

          Mistakes are Normal

Another lesson the World Cup shows is that even the best players fail. Penalty kicks are missed, goals are given up, and favorites are eliminated. For young players, seeing this on the biggest stage is reassuring. Mistakes don’t define a player. What really matters is how they respond — regrouping, supporting teammates, and continuing to compete. This helps kids understand that growth comes from resilience, not perfection.

          Why This Matters

Watching the World Cup doesn’t turn kids into elite players overnight, but it can influence how they see the game and their place in it. They learn confidence, resilience, creativity, and teamwork through inspiration from the best players in the world. Sometimes, the most valuable development happens when kids are simply allowed to watch, enjoy, and imagine themselves on the field. For youth players, the excitement and creativity they see can inspire them long after the match is over.

          College Soccer Explained

There are several different levels of college soccer for both men and women in the United States. In total, there are five main college soccer organizations:

           NCAA Division I

           NCAA Division II

           NCAA Division III

           NAIA

           Junior College (NJCAA)

Each level offers a different experience. NCAA Division I is the highest level, with the most funding, training demands, and competition. NCAA Division II is similar in intensity but often places a stronger balance between athletics and academics. NCAA Division III programs do not offer athletic scholarships and focus heavily on academics, though the level of play can still be strong. NAIA schools provide a balanced blend of academics and athletics and can be comparable to NCAA Division II in both competitiveness and commitment. Junior College (NJCAA) includes two-year schools. Many athletes start at this level to develop, improve academically, or gain exposure before transferring to a four-year college program. These different options give players the opportunity to find a school that fits their soccer ability, academic goals, time commitment, and financial needs.

When Does College Soccer Become Relevant?

For youth soccer players, college soccer usually becomes a consideration once high school begins. If your child is interested in playing at the next level, they can begin to research colleges and programs, create a highlight video, build a basic recruiting profile, and reach out to college coaches. Players can reach out to coaches at any time via email, text, or call. The earlier your player gets on a coach’s radar, the better. However, generally as a college coach, they have to wait until June 15th after your sophomore year of high school to contact you (NCSA Sports). NCAA Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA have less strict rules and may contact players earlier. Most college recruiting activity takes place during junior and senior years of high school, which is when players are typically on college coaches’ radars.

What College Coaches Are Looking For

College coaches evaluate more than just highlights or statistics. On the field, they look for players who are comfortable with the ball, understand the game, are physically fit, and make good decisions under pressure. Technical skill, game awareness, and consistent performance all matter. A player’s attitude is just as important. Coaches value effort, coachability, and a strong work ethic, along with the ability to handle challenges and compete positively. Off the field, academics and character play a major role. Players who are responsible, respectful, and committed in the classroom are better prepared for the demands of college soccer.

          Steps To Take

If your child is aiming to play college soccer, there are several steps families can take to stay on track without getting overwhelmed. Start by tracking your child’s progress (game statistics, awards, and notable achievements) and encourage them to keep developing their skills and physical fitness. Help your player research schools and programs that are a good fit both academically and athletically. Work on creating a recruiting profile and highlight video to share with coaches. Consider attending college ID camps or showcases, which provide opportunities for players to be seen by multiple coaches, learn what specific schools are looking for, and experience different programs firsthand. Reach out to college coaches professionally via email or recruiting platforms, and keep in contact with your club to stay informed about opportunities, tryouts, and showcases. Finally, prioritize balance and perspective—academics, rest, and enjoying the game are just as important as soccer performance. And remember, there’s no set timeline for committing; some players commit early, while others make their decision later in high school.

          What’s Changing in Youth Soccer

For the upcoming 2026/2027 season, major youth soccer organizations, including US Club Soccer, US Youth Soccer, and AYSO, will shift from “birth-year” age groups to “school-year” age groups. This update aligns soccer more closely with school grade levels, aiming to improve inclusivity, reduce mismatches, and support player development and participation.

          The New Age Group System

Since 2017, these organizations have formed teams based on the calendar year, using birthdays from January 1 through December 31. After gathering feedback and conducting research, youth soccer teams will now be formed based on a seasonal age-group cycle from August 1 through July 31. As US Youth Soccer CEO Tom Condone explained, “We believe this shift to an August 1 player formation cycle better aligns with school calendars, supports social and individual needs, and ultimately enhances the youth soccer experience for families across the country.” US Youth Soccer emphasizes its commitment to supporting the development of every player, and this adjustment is intended to further that goal.

          Why the Change Matters

This change is important because with the current birth-year age groups, there are players who get “trapped” (US Club Soccer), which leads to mismatches in training, competition, and social development. For example, a player who is in eighth grade but has teammates playing in high school soccer may have fewer training and game opportunities. Similarly, some high school senior players must move down an age group, because many of their teammates will have already graduated. Changing to age groups that align better with school years will help reduce the number of “trapped” players. This shift also supports overall youth soccer participation. Evidence suggests that age groups aligned with school-grade cohorts lead to higher enrollment and better long-term player retention (US Club Soccer). Kids are more likely to experience a smoother balance between sport, school, and social life. Overall, this change will make youth soccer more inclusive, socially aligned, and developmentally appropriate.

          Who Will Be Impacted?

All youth soccer players, families, and clubs will be affected by this transition, as every roster will be updated for the 2026/2027 season. Some players may move up or down an age group, join new teams, or gain new teammates. Clubs will need to reorganize rosters and reassign coaches based on the new cutoff dates. It is expected that nearly every team will be impacted in some way.

To be prepared for this change, it’s most important to stay in communication with your child’s club and coach. Check their new age group, follow tryout information, anticipate roster changes, and ask questions as needed. Being proactive will help ensure a smooth and positive transition into the new season!
